Police are probing a single-vehicle crash overnight near Smithville that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old from West Lincoln.
On Sunday, at about 12:52 a.m., the Niagara Regional Police Service Communications Unit received a 911 call reporting a serious motor vehicle collision in West Lincoln.
Officers from 8 District – Grimsby along with Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics and West Lincoln Fire Services attended the scene in the area of Caistor Gainsborough Townline Road and Sixteen Road.
The initial investigation determined that a pickup truck had left the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire, police said in a news release.
A male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene as a result of the collision.
Detectives from the NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit were assigned to the investigation.
They were assisted by detectives from the NRPS Forensic Services Unit, and the coroner.
The deceased has been identified as an 18-year-old man from West Lincoln.
Out of respect for the next of kin, the driver's identity is not being released, police said.
Roads in the area that had been closed for the investigation were reopened at approximately 7:40 a.m.
