GUELPH - A 25-year-old woman had a rude awakening Monday evening.
Guelph Police say officers and paramedics responded to a home shortly after 7 p.m., where a woman had fallen asleep with candles close to the area where she was sleeping.
Police say the woman suffered burns to her head, an ear and upper shoulders after the candles caused her hair and sweater to catch on fire. Police say her injuries were not life-threatening.
Health Canada says an average of eight people a year die due to candle-related fires in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and B.C. alone and recommends putting out all candles before going to sleep. You should also keep candles away from things that can catch fire like curtains, decorations and clothing.
If you do find your clothing has caught fire, the federal government says you should 'Stop, Drop and Roll.'
