NRPH reports 18 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, and no deaths.
According to regional data, 78 cases were listed as resolved on today's date, bringing Niagara's total active cases to 210.
The number of active cases in Thorold has dropped to 9.
St Catharines remain as the top location for active cases, with 78 confirmed on Tuesday.
One new outbreak was reported, however, the list of healthcare outbreaks is unchanged at two.
Yesterday during a media conference on the pandemic, the region's acting medical officer of health, Dr. Mustafa Hirji said the long-standing outbreaks at Garden City Manor and Tufford Manor in St Catharines have been the result of 'bad luck' as single cases have overlapped.
However, all residents in Niagara's long-term care and retirement homes have been vaccinated, predicting an imminent end to the ongoing outbreaks among residents in those locations.
Public Health has administered 10,804 doses of the vaccine so far.
Ontario update
Public Health Ontario has reported 966 new cases of COVID-19 today (March 2).
Today's report includes 979 recoveries and 11 new deaths, of which, two were long-term care residents.
The deaths reported today include one person between 40 and 59 years old, four people between 60 and 79 years old, and six people aged 80 or older.
The province has reported 56 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and six new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.
The March 2 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:
- 10,546 active cases, which is down from 10,570 yesterday
- 677 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 659 reported yesterday.
- There are 284 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 280) and 189 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 175 yesterday)
- The province reported 30,767 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 2.9 per cent positivity rate.
- Another 31,074 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 11.1 million tests have been completed.
- Of the 966 new cases reported today, 253 are from Toronto, 223 cases are from Peel, 99 are from York Region, and 36 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
- There are 106 active outbreaks at long-term care homes.
- The new cases reported today include 183 individuals aged 19 and under, 389 people between 20 and 39 years old, 249 people between 40 and 59 years old, 119 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 28 people aged 80 and over.
Variants of concern
- The province has reported 542 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7).
- The province has reported 27 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
- The province has reported 3 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil.
- According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.
Vaccine update for March 1:
- There were 22,326 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on March 1, which is up from 17,424 administered on Feb. 28.
- As of 8 p.m. on March 1, the province reported 727,021 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
- In total, 264,896 people have been fully vaccinated, having received two doses of vaccine.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 302,805 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 285,262 recoveries and 6,997 deaths, of which 3,867 were individuals living in long-term care homes.
The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,037 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.
The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 51.2 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 2.8 per cent from last week (Feb. 14-20).
