Thorold Grade 5 student asked for food donations instead of birthday gifts - and a whole parade showed up

"Mikey is caring and wanted to help those less fortunate," grandparents say

A local boy felt the need to help out rather than receive birthday gifts, and asked for food donations for Community Care for his upcoming birthday.

The call was answered by a whole parade of donors, who cheered on the soon-to-be 11-year-old.

His grandparents John and Rita O'Brien wrote about the event in an email to Thorold News:

During these unprecedented times, good deeds are worth acknowledging.

Mikey DeGasperis, son of Kendra and Michael DeGasperis of Thorold, safely celebrated his upcoming 11th birthday with a ‘birthday-drive-by-parade’ on Friday, November 27.

Mikey is a grade 5 student at Monsignor Clancy Catholic Elementary School, Thorold.

Mikey is caring and wanted to help those less fortunate by giving up birthday presents for his birthday in lieu of food donations in support of community care, Thorold.

Over 20 vehicles of friends and family joined the parade ready to cheer on Mikey while supporting those in need.

Mikey’s birthday is December 8.

What a great initiative being done safely from a distance.
