The Decew Falls Water Treatment plant in Thorold will be getting greener, following a partnership between the region and Land Care Niagara to plant around 7,400 native tree seedlings at the plant grounds.
The project will help inform the development of the so-called Niagara Region Greening initiative, aiming to increase vegetation across the region to support the health of the ecosystem.
The seedlings that will be planted are a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, strategically planted using landscape ecology principles, the region said.
Analysis of the Decew Falls water plant grounds was made possible through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, which revelaed that it was a ‘highly suitable’ area to increase the forest canopy in the 12 Mile Creek watershed.
The region said other sites are currently being evaluated for tree planting opportunities.
Land Care Niagara is a non-profit, that is working to create a healthy and sustainable rural and urban environment, consisting of citizens who are knowledgeable and active in land resource management.
