It’s taken 10 years of hard work and tireless fundraising but the Friends of Beaverdams Church (FOBC) are proud to announce the first-ever musical performance to take place at the restored church on Marlatts Rd.
On Saturday. Sept. 16, Rick Young & Friends will come down to the church to deliver an afternoon of music.
As ThoroldToday reported, the FOBC is a group of dedicated Thorold residents that have restored the heritage site to its former glory, so it can now serve as a community centre.
Beaverdams Church was built in 1832 by British Loyalists who left the United States during the American Revolution.
It is characterized by a New England meetinghouse style construction, an almost a square plan, paired entrances for men and women, arched ceiling and flanking galleries (concealed in the 1890s) and minimal – but skillfully wrought – ornamentation.
Today, it is one of the oldest Methodist churches still standing in Ontario.
According to the president of the FOBC, David Cowan, the architecture of the heritage building makes for a perfect performance space.
“The acoustics inside are the best for music anywhere in town,” he told ThoroldToday, in a recent interview. “It’s not a big place but it’s a very resonant room. Any music that goes on there is going to go over quite well.”
A Musical Afternoon Featuring Rick Young & Friends, presenting the Music of Fanny Crosby, will take place at Beaversdams Church on Saturday, September 16 at 1:30 p.m.
Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at Print Three, 2B Sullivan Ave., Thorold and Trinity United Church office, 15 Pine St S, Thorold or by calling Donna Cowan at (905) 227-7556.
