CITY OF THOROLD
PRESS RELEASE
*************************

The City of Thorold has been working diligently for months with all partners involved in the Canada Summer Games, specifically the Canada Summer Games Park. As a pre-condition to the City of Thorold’s support, Thorold Council passed a motion containing the following conditions must be met before a final decision is rendered.

  • Funding commitments from upper levels of government and other partners, to fully fund the capital cost of the Games must be confirmed. The Federal and Provincial governments have both made funding announcements and the other partners are seeking approval from their respective councils/board. We anticipate this being completed by the end of November, 2019.

  • Partnership commitments are confirmed from the City of St. Catharines, Niagara Region, Brock University and Canada Summer Games Host Society. Each partner is working collaboratively on this initiative in order for a final agreement to come forward for approval.

  • An operating model and partnership agreement for the new facility be prepared for the consideration and approval by Thorold City Council. This agreement is currently being prepared; this is a complex document that involves many different elements and as such, has been taking longer than expected. Thorold staff want to ensure that the agreements presented to Council consider the municipality’s best interest.

As the pre-conditions are still being worked on, a report and decision to Thorold City Council will not be possible for the Nov. 19, 2019 Council meeting that was previously communicated. As a result, the Nov. 19, 2019 meeting will begin at its regular time of 6:30 p.m. Rest assured proper public notice on a revised date will be provided on our City of Thorold website www.thorold.ca, local media and our City of Thorold Facebook page.

Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to work toward this important initiative.
