Capacity crowd turns out for opening of Silver Stick Tournament

Mild chaos as thousands pack Meridian Community Centre in Pelham

Incessant rain and a packed parking lot did not deter thousands of hockey-focused kids and their parents from attending the opening ceremonies of the Silver Stick Hockey Tournament at the Meridian Community Centre on Thursday night.

Seventy teams from across Canada and the USA are participating, including the Pelham Panthers.

Tournament Director Paul DeDivitiis, of Pelham, welcomed the thousands who filled the Accipiter Rink at the MCC, and Pelham Deputy Mayor John Wink brought greetings from the Town.

“Thank you to all the coaches, players, and families for being part of this event,” said Wink. “This tournament wouldn't happen if it wasn't for your dedication to the game.”

International Silver Stick competition consist of numerous AA and lower regional tournaments across North America, whereby the various champions advance to represent their region at the International Finals.

The tournament continues until Sunday.
