Car carrying six totaled after plunge into Welland Canal early Tuesday

One man seriously injured - police still looking for suspected driver

Police are still looking for the driver of a 2009 Audi that ended up in the Welland Canal shortly after 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident after the car, a 2009 Audi travelling eastbound in the area of the Glendale Avenue bridge, seemingly struck a tree and darted down the steep ditch towards the canal.

The car ended up in water roughly one metre deep.

Police say the car could have been carrying up to six people including the suspected driver who fled on foot.

The other passengers managed to get out of the car on their own.

A man in his 20s is being treated in a trauma center outside the region with serious injuries.

The other passengers received care at a local hospital.

Police are continuing the investigation and are looking to speak to the driver of the car.

On Tuesday morning the tracks from the incident then night before were still clearly visible, and a towing crew was working on getting the totalled car away from the site.

The incident could have had a much worse outcome.

Police say the area of the water level had been drained/lowered just a few weeks ago.
