CITY OF THOROLD

The City of Thorold partnered with Heart Niagara to provide cycle and wheel safety training to 200 grade six students in Thorold this week.
The City’s Active Transportation Advisory Committee liaised with community partners to implement the training program with the Niagara Catholic School Board and District School Board of Niagara. The program began on Monday at Richmond Street School, followed by Westmount School, Prince of Wales School and Monsignor Clancy School throughout the rest of the week.
“Youth in our community are spending more time outdoors now that the nicer weather is here,” said City of Thorold Mayor, Terry Ugulini. “We are happy to provide this important and fun training to students so safety can be front of mind when they’re out riding their bikes this summer.”
The cost of Heart Niagara’s program is usually $10 per student, but City of Thorold approved a grant that covered the cost for every student who wanted to participate. The program is also designed to provide a bike to students who may not have had access to their own.
“This program works due to partnerships, and specifically, City of Thorold contributing to eliminate the cost to Thorold families,” said Karen Stearne of Heart Niagara. “Heart Niagara is grateful to each of our collaborators for their confidence in service delivery. The full effect of supporting active transportation and cycle education will continue to pay dividends in the years to come in Thorold and beyond.”
With the support of local community partners including Niagara Student Transportation Services, BikeFit, BrokenSpoke, Bike Niagara and the John & Lilian Clark Fund, more than 50 new bike helmets, 30 sets of bike lights and 40 bike bells were also distributed to Thorold students throughout the week.
