Students officially made use of the new crosswalk in front of Richmond Street Public School on their walk to school this morning.
“It’s great to see the crosswalk in front of Richmond Street School come to life,” said Geoff Holman, director of public works and community services. “We’ve scheduled a crossing guard at this location three times throughout the school day to help ensure Richmond Street School students are able to get to and from school safely.”
City staff worked with two contractors to install the crosswalk at the intersection of Park Lane and Richmond Street. Final preparations went into the crosswalk last week in order for it to be ready for use by students today, as they had a professional activity (PA) day on Monday.
“We are excited for our students to be able to access a new crosswalk to get to Richmond each day. This will provide another route for our students to get to Richmond safely and will hopefully help to alleviate some of the pedestrian traffic at Richmond and Collier Road, which is an extremely busy intersection. A reminder from all of our crossing guards… all traffic must remain stopped until the crossing guards have lowered their stop sign and left the roadway completely,” said Principal Mark Leduc. “Thank you to City of Thorold for helping to keep our Raptors safe!”
A crossing guard will be situated at the crosswalk Monday through Friday between 8 and 9 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
