Because of the rise in COVID-19 cases, the City of Thorold has decided to close the Thorold Community Arenas until further notice, leaving residents of Thorold without a place to ice skate or play ice hockey.

“Out of an abundance of caution, and given the rise of COVID-19 infections, our Arenas have been closed until further notice,” read a statement on the city’s website.

The news of the closure led to many disappointed reactions on social media.

“Absolutely ridiculous!!!”, said one person. “Too bad we don't have ANY outdoor rinks,” added another.

The Niagara region saw 225 new cases of COVID-19 today, the highest the case count since Jan. 11, 2021.

Concluded the statement on the city’s Facebook page, “The City of Thorold, in consultation with Niagara Public Health, will continue to monitor the situation. The safety of our residents and staff are our top priority.”
