Thorold is about to become a lot more prideful. The city is finalizing a deal to install a rainbow crosswalk at the intersection of Front Street and Clairmont Avenue.
As ThoroldToday reported, back in July local real estate agent Anthony Feor delivered an impassioned presentation to city council members asking that the city install a pride crosswalk.
“Visibility is key in the fight for equality, diversity and inclusion,” he said at the time. “I think it is time Thorold join the three other municipalities in Niagara in showing our commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
The crosswalk will feature an updated version of the Rainbow flag, that has new elements in it, representing people who are transgender, as well as two black- and brown stripes, which lends support to people of colour, as well as individuals living with HIV/AIDS or who have succumbed to the virus.
The project comes with a hefty price tag of $23,549.86. According to a city hall report, the reason that the price is so high is due to supply chain issues.
Feor has committed to securing additional funding for the project, but to ensure the crosswalk will be installed in time money is to be re-allocated from the Asphalt Crack Sealing Program. Any funds Feor can come up will go straight back into the program.
If councillors approve the project at tonight’s city council meeting, the rainbow crosswalk will be installed by the end of June.
