Earlier this year during the City’s annual budget deliberations, Council approved funding to complete the second phase of the reconstruction of Broderick Avenue between Westmount Avenue and Collier Road North. The preferred design for the project was selected through the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (2020) process where a variety of road cross sectional improvements and replacement alternatives were evaluated. Important elements of the design include, active transportation accommodations and improvements to the geometric layout of the road, storm drainage, sidewalks, curbs and roadway illumination. The final scope of the project was prepared based on feedback received at the Public Information Centre held on February 15, 2024.

At the City Council meeting on May 28, 2024, Council awarded the construction contract to Rankin Construction Inc. who plan to start construction shortly. During the construction there will be some temporary closures and inconveniences typically associated with a project of this scale, however the project is expected to be substantially completed by early Fall of this year. Some final restoration and project deficiencies will be addressed in the Spring of 2025. Reference the City’s website for current project updates.

Thank you to the Canada Community Building Fund (CCBF) who have contributed $1,397,000.00 towards the Broderick Avenue Reconstruction ($622,000.00 for Phase One and $775,000.00 for Phase Two). This project supports a major goal of the City of Thorold’s Strategic Plan: To build and sustain infrastructure that generates civic pride.

“We were pleased to see Council approve the second phase of this key infrastructure project as part of the 2024 Capital Budget,” says Manoj Dilwaria, Chief Administrative Officer. “We look forward to completing Phase Two for this ongoing Broderick Avenue Reconstruction project.”
