The city is getting ready to spend $740,000 for new oxygen tanks for Thorold’s firefighters. The reason: the existing inventory is about to expire.

The Request for Proposal is looking for a vendor of so-called Self-Contain Breathing Appartatus, SCBA, which includes the oxygen tanks seen on the backs of fire crews, as well as their accompanying packs.

A city report said the current inventory will be expiring by the end of 2022, and that the force needs to replace its entire stock.

The expense was anticipated and approved in the 2022 budget, but will still leave an impact on next year’s levy, a city report said, with $47,000 to pay it down.

So far, only two sellers were reviewed, with AJ Stone Company seeming like the most attractive option for the city.

The deal will bring a modest budget overrrun of around $2,000.
