COVID-19: 42 cases today in Niagara, variants continue to increase

NRPH reports 42 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, and another increase in local variant cases. 

There are now 349 active cases in Niagara, and 231 variant cases. Seven of those have been confirmed to be the U.K variant of concern.

Thorold still has 21 active cases. The largest amount of known infections that have not resolved is in St Catharines, that has 77 active cases. 

No new outbreaks were noted, leaving the number at 19, of which two are in nursing home settings. In total, 250 outbreaks have been declared closed during the pandemic in Niagara.

The death toll remains at 374.

Ten patients are receiving care in hospital, according to Niagara Health.

Ontario update

Ontario reported 1,546 cases on Tuesday, of which 465 cases are in Toronto, and 329 in Peel.

Health officials are looking closely at the positivity rate, which has increased for almost a straight week.
