COVID-19 UPDATE: Niagara sees jump in cases on Wednesday (June 2)

Another case of new India-origin variant detected in the region

After two days of significant drops in the daily COVID-19 cases in Niagara, Public Health reported 41 new infections and one new confirmed case of the so-called B.1617, or India origin variant of concern present in the region. The number is more than Monday and Tuesdays increases combined, which added up to 23.

Following 61 recoveries, the number of active cases is now 601.

24 COVID-19 patients are receiving care in hospital. 13 of thsoe are in the ICU, which is one less admitted than yesterday. 

Other hospital units remain free from COVID-19 outbreaks, with The Meadows of Dorchester in NIagara Falls Primrose Unit being the only health care facility with an active outbreaks.

Provincially, Ontario is reporting 733 COVID-19 cases and 25 deaths on Wednesday.
