Could the City be one step closer to selling McMillan Park to the DSBN, clearing the way for the installation of a turf field?
Last year, the DSBN put forward a proposal to buy McMillan Park to install a full-size synthetic turf football field, but negotiations between the city and school board eventually broke down.
"The City of Thorold has informed the DSBN that they are not willing to sell the land at McMillan Park for the site of a new synthetic turf field and track at Thorold Secondary School," the DSBN told ThoroldToday at the time.
While the turf field was not set to be discussed during last night's city council meeting, Councillor Mike De Divitiis called for an impromptu vote to discuss the proposal once again.
"I believe this matter is time sensitive," he told his fellow councillors.
His plea did not fall on deaf ears, as his motion to move the discussion behind closed doors was quickly approved.
Because the deal would involve the sale of city-owned land, the public is not privy to discussions regarding the project.
When council returned to open chambers, there was no indication as to what the time-sensitive matter had been about.
"I suggest that Council formally receive the verbal updates provided by staff and that staff proceeds as directed in closed session," said City Clerk Matthew Trennum.
Thorold Secondary students who are still dreaming of the turf field, will have to be patient a little while longer.
