Gayle Sears, Executive Director of Pelham Cares, recently took time from her busy schedule to speak to the Fenwick Lions Club about the impact their donation will have on local communities. With 35 years of experience in social services, Gayle is the organization's first full-time employee. The club was delighted to donate $5,000 along with a large barrel of food to Pelham Cares.

Pelham Cares began 41 years ago as an ad-hoc basement outreach group, aiding neighbors in need. Today, the organization boasts four employees, a board of directors, and numerous volunteers dedicated to helping their clients.

The organization’s objectives are multifaceted:

  • Food Security: Serving around 100 families each month, their food bank operates like a grocery store, allowing clients to "shop" for items their families will enjoy. Most food is donated or purchased as non-perishable items, with fresh produce provided by generous local farmers.
  • Transportation: Volunteer drivers assist clients by transporting them to medical appointments, even in other cities if necessary.
  • Scholarship Program: They offer scholarships to those in need.
  • Referral Program: Clients needing services not offered by Pelham Cares are referred to local organizations that can help.
  • Emergency Services: Support is available for individuals affected by fires or floods.

Regrettably, the client base has been growing. Many of those seeking assistance are underemployed, earning incomes that sometimes fall short of covering expenses. Even families with two wage earners often struggle to make ends meet. While some needs for the food bank may be temporary, the support is greatly appreciated when it’s needed.

Lions Club members work diligently and enjoy themselves while engaging in various activities to raise funds that benefit the community. Those interested in learning more about becoming a Lion are encouraged to contact the Fenwick Lions Club.
