Former Thorold Mayor Donald Angus McMillan has passed away.
According to his obituary, McMillan passed away on May 29 at age 97. A doctor by trade, Donald McMillan was elected mayor of the city in 1972 and also served on the regional council before retiring from politics in 1985. During his tenure, he oversaw establishing Thorold as a city, three years after being elected to the post. Despite his departure from politics, he continued his medical practice before retiring in 2007, shortly after turning 82.
His 57-year experience as doctor as well as his involvement in local politics made McMillan a familiar face around town, partly through his column in the Thorold News. In his later years, McMIllan took an interest in the legacy of the local film-pioneer Herbert Kalmus, which he spoke to ThoroldToday about, as he tried to get a park or road named after the inventor.
“Despite his busy professional career, Dad always made time for his family,” the family wrote in the obituary. “While evenings were filled with office hours or council meetings, Dad was home for family dinner every night. Some of his happiest days were spent on the dock at the family cottage on Muldrew Lake in Gravenhurst, Ontario.”
A funeral service will be held outdoors in the park beside the Thorold Seniors Centre, 8 Carleton Street South, on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11 a.m.
Flags outside city hall will be lowered until Sunday, the city said.
