Quick to adapt to their surroundings, turkeys have become a common sight in Niagara

With the resurgence of wild turkeys in recent years it was inevitable that one (or more) would be spotted in the urban areas of Thorold.

It's unclear whether this one was looking to catch a game but it was spotted wandering around the baseball diamond on Martin Street Park this afternoon.

Canadian Geographic recently reported, "Abundant in the region before the start of the 20th century, wild turkeys vanished from the province by 1909. Government of Ontario reports cited unregulated hunting and the clearing of forests for agriculture as causes of the species’ extirpation."

They also recorded that in 1984 the Ontario government began re-introducing turkeys back into the rural areas of Ontario.

They estimate there are about 100,000 wild turkeys in Ontario today and they have rebounded so well that hunting them was reintroduced.
