NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF THOROLD
**********************
The Thorold Community Arena is now open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.
Earlier this year, City Council approved up to $1.5 million in 2022 capital budget for the refurbishment of the Frank Doherty ice plant, which included the following upgrades:
- Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) code compliance
- New safety measures to improve public and staff safety
- Equipment and technological upgrades to improve energy efficiency and plant reliability
- Emergency response manuals and training for Fire and Emergency Services
The City also purchased a new ice resurfacing machine to replace the old ice resurfacer. The machine is fully electric which effectively reduces emissions and improves the overall air quality in the facility.
“Originally built in 1974, the Frank Doherty Arena has been a pillar to growing the culture of sport and recreation in the City of Thorold for the last 48 years,” said Mayor Terry Ugulini. “I am pleased to see this outstanding facility reopen for residents and various community groups to use and enjoy.”
Information on program schedules and bookings can be reviewed on the City’s website. Residents can pay for ice time online, by phone, or by visiting City Hall.
“I’d like to thank City Council for dedicating the necessary funds and resources to these ice plant upgrades earlier this year,” said Manoj Dilwaria, chief administrative officer. “These much-needed improvements enable our Community Services Department to continue to facilitate fun and engaging programming for residents of all ages to participate in.”
