Not all heroes wear capes.

On Saturday, Jan. 27, a free food giveaway is taking place in the parking lot of the Holy Rosary Church.

The donor of the food is a local business man who prefers to remain anonymous. To help get the food to those who need it, Councillor Carmen DeRose is helping out.

“This gentleman has done it before,” DeRose tells ThoroldToday. “He buys truckloads of food and then we distribute it to the needy.”

DeRose has enroled the Knights of Columbus to help him dole out the food.

This is not the first time the anonymous donor has stepped it up for the people of Thorold.

Back in May, he donated over $40,000 to Niagara Nutrition Partners, through the City of Thorold.

“The anonymous donor contacted me after hearing of the funding shortage affecting school meal programs,” said Mayor Terry Ugulini, at the time. “The donor said to me that having a successful business in the city of Thorold made this donation possible and that no one should go to school hungry.”

Now the anonymous do-gooder wants to help Thorold residents once again.

“He’s a great guy who loves to give back to the community,” says DeRose. “He just wants to help people.”

DeRose says the donation couldn’t have come at a better time.

“With the state of the economy, a lot of people are hurting and people are in need right now,” he says. “Prices of food have skyrocketed. It’s a nice thing for the community.”

The food giveaway will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 in the parking lot of the Holy Rosary Church on Queen St.
