Not looking forward to completing your tax return?

For the next two months, Thorold is offering a series of free tax clinics, with volunteers ready to prepare tax returns for those who qualify.

Free tax clinics are hosted by community organizations across Canada, through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.

You may be eligible for help at a free tax clinic if you have a modest income and a simple tax situation.

In general, you are considered to have a modest income if based on your family size, your total family income is less than the amount shown in the chart below. Confirm these amounts with your local community organization as their amounts may be different.

Family size

Total family income

1 person

$35,000

2 persons

$45,000

3 persons

$47,500

4 persons

$50,000

5 persons

$52,500

In general, your tax situation is simple if you have no income or if your income comes from the following sources: employment; pension; benefits such as Canada Pension Plan, disability, employment insurance, and social assistance; registered retirement savings plans (RRSP's); support payments; scholarships; fellowships; bursaries or grants; and interest (less than $1,000).

Your tax situation is not simple and you are not eligible if you: are self-employed or have employment expenses; have business or rental income and expenses; have capital gains or losses; filed for bankruptcy; or are completing a tax return for a deceased person.

The tax clinics are being offered—with no appointment required—at the Thorold Seniors Centre at 8 Carleton Street South on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the following dates: March 2, 9, 16 and 23; April 6, 13, 20 and 27. Clients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Saturday, March 30, the clinic will move to the Thorold Community Activities Group, located at 131 Richmond Street, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Additional tax clinics will be offered at Community Care, 19 Albert Street West, by appointment only, on Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon on March 4, 11, 18 and 25 and April 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
