French bakery on Front Street forced to delay opening because of permit issue

'Trust me, I hope I will open tomorrow. It’s been a long time. We need to open and start our business,' says the bakery's owner

The bakery is ready to go, as soon as city hall gives them the okay.

When it was announced back in August 2021 that a French bakery, JC Patissier, would be coming to the Carr-Millar-McMillan building on Front Street, many people in Thorold were excited. But five months later and the bakery still hasn’t opened its doors. The culprit is the business's permit.

“We have to really go through every step with the permit because it’s a change of use so we have to get engineers involved. It’s taking some time, it’s out of my hands. A very stressful situation,” says Zahra Anzza, who owns the bakery together with her partner Juan Asenjo.

“The use of the building is commercial to start with. The previous owner used to sell equipment from it, appliances. We are doing a restaurant so it’s a different use of the store. It’s all a precaution to make sure it’s safe," Anzza explains.

But one thing is certain. As soon as the bakery gets the okay from city hall, they will be ready to open.

Says Anzza, “Trust me, I hope I will open tomorrow. It’s been a long time. We need to open and start our business.”
