Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) was named one of Hamilton-Niagara’s Top Employers for the fourth year in a row. This annual competition is organized by editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, in recognition of Hamilton-Niagara area employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. The winners were announced in a magazine supplement published in the Hamilton Spectator.

This is the tenth time HHS has received this recognition since the annual competition launched in 2008.

“You can build a career here you that you wouldn’t get to elsewhere,” says Aaron Levo, vice-president of people, culture and communications. “We actively make sure people are connected to opportunities to advance their career.”

The competition highlighted HHS for our employee benefits, training and development opportunities, and the variety of career options available within one organization.

HHS is the largest employer in the greater Hamilton region, with 18,000 staff, physicians and volunteers.

Editors of the Top Employers competition evaluated submissions using eight criteria: workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.

“A skilled workforce is required to drive a diversified economy,” says Kristina Leung, managing editor at Mediacorp, which runs the competition. “One of the hallmarks of this year’s winners is investing in professional development at all stages of employees’ careers. This year’s winners prioritize opportunities for upskilling and reskilling to ensure they are equipped for future needs.”

The focus on skills improvement can also be seen in the region’s public sector employers, which include health care authorities, universities and colleges, and local government administration. In each of these fields, local employers are investing in skills upgrading to deliver services more efficiently – and building more durable careers for their employees.

Founded in 1992, Mediacorp Canada Inc. is the nation’s largest publisher of employment periodicals. Since 1999, the Toronto-based publisher has managed the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, which includes 19 regional and special-interest editorial competitions that reach millions of Canadians annually through a variety of magazine and newspaper partners.
