A fire inside a Merritt Street property shut down traffic temporarily on Tuesday night as crews worked on the scene.
It was around 8:30 p.m that several pumper trucks, police and ambulance rushed to the scene of the house fire next to the Early Bird restaurant, which had not developed to visible flames but appeared to have taken hold inside a wall, emitting a pillar of smoke from the roof.
Neighbours on the scene told ThoroldToday that the house had been abandoned for a long period of time, and that it was suspected to temporarily be inhabited by squatters.
There was no immediate information available regarding the cause of the fire.
