Lincoln youth and skateboard and BMX enthusiasts will soon be able to use the town's new skate park and pump track.

Although the rest of the Rotary Park is closed until fall of 2021 as it remains under construction, the skate park and pump track opened to the public June 26 with limitations on the number of visitors.

“I think our community and our youth have been very patient with us,” said Shannon McKay, director of community services for the Town of Lincoln.

She said the pandemic was an especially hard time for the youth, given the lack of open public spaces because of lockdowns and subsequent construction.

Originally set to open on June 30, the skate park and pump track instead opened a few days ahead of time.

“These spaces have become so much more important to people’s physical and emotional well-being, so it’s important that these amenities open for our users,” she said.

For now the skate park will be limited to 20 riders and the pump track is limited to 10. According to McKay, as provincial restrictions ease, so will the limitations on the number of riders at one time.

The rest of the park is currently on track to open in fall of 2021 and will include amenities such as play area, walking trails, an open lawn, a butterfly garden, an outdoor learning area and a parking lot.
