On Friday morning, students at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Elementary School took part in the annual Terry Fox School Run.
Dressed head to toe in red and white — the official colours of the Terry Fox Foundation — students walked laps around the school's football field.
“We do it every year,” explains Councillor Carmen DeRose, who is a teacher at the school. “I think we’re close to almost $50,000 we’ve raised over all the years.”
This year, the kids have raised close to $1,000 so far, but the campaign is not over yet.
“Our goal is $2,600 because that’s what we hit last year,” says DeRose. “We’re going to continue to raise for another week and we’re going to push it.”
The Terry Fox School Run is an important part of the curriculum at the school.
“It’s just the sense of community, bringing everybody together,” DeRose says. “We teach them about Terry Fox. To me, he’s a true Canadian hero. We’ve been watching films on him, reading up on him. He’s just a great role model.”
DeRose hopes that the annual event will inspire kids to keep participating in the run when they're older, to “continue the tradition.”
“The kids love it,” he adds.
