Niagara MPP Wayne Gates says he is lucky to have come out of a serious car collision over the weekend without major injuries.

Gates, representing Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Fort Erie in the provincial parliament, said he was involved in a 'pretty serious car accident' over the weekend, but did not provide any details on where it occurred, or what happened.

"...But I want to assure everyone that I am fine and doing well! Just currently dealing with some sore ribs and a sore chest, nothing the doctors say a few days rest won't solve quickly," Gates wrote in a statement on Facebook.

Apart from the minor injuries, and missing some events, Gates said he will be back to work soon, and expressed his gratitude to the first responders who attended the scene.

"Make no mistake about it, we all wish to avoid these accidents but when it happens there is nothing more comforting than seeing our Region's finest there to take care of you," Gates wrote, also commending the local medical staff.

"Their compassion and dedication was moving to see firsthand and I can promise you I will never forget it."
