NIAGARA – This October, the Greg Frewin Theatre in Niagara Falls will be at the heart of magical celebrations as Ryan Joyce, President of the Canadian Association of Magicians, performs throughout the month in honour of National Magic Week. “The celebration began 96 years ago as a single day on Oct. 31 to commemorate the death of legendary escape artist Harry Houdini,” says Joyce.

Expanded in the 1960s, National Magic Week celebrates the creativity, history, and wonder of magic, paying tribute to Houdini—one of the most iconic names in the world of illusion.

But, as with magic, there’s always a secret.

"One of the biggest misconceptions is that Houdini was a magician, when in fact, he was an escape artist," explains Joyce. "To say Houdini was a magician is like calling a chef a baker—they both create in the kitchen, but their crafts require entirely different skills."

Although Houdini began his career as a magician, he is best remembered for his daring escapes.

One of his most famous contributions to the world of magic was the invention of the illusion he performed with his brother, titled "Metamorphosis"—an act that has stood the test of time and continues to captivate audiences today.

“We wanted to honour National Magic Week and Houdini’s contribution to the art form by presenting his famous illusion in Niagara Falls,” says Joyce, “but in true magic spirit, we’ve added our own unique twist.”

The Greg Frewin Theatre, located in the heart of Niagara Falls, is proud to welcome Ryan Joyce for this celebration of magic, blending history, illusion, and Houdini’s indomitable spirit. Visitors and locals alike are invited to witness a tribute to one of the most iconic figures in escapology as National Magic Week unfolds at one of Canada’s premier venues.

The Canadian Association of Magicians (CAM) is a non-profit, national organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the art of magic in Canada. CAM provides resources, networking opportunities, and advocacy for magicians at all levels, fostering a thriving magic community across the country.
