This International Women’s Day, Niagara Health is honouring the contributions of the passionate and powerful women who provide high-quality care to our patients through the Women of Niagara Health photo series and calendar. Thirty-three women from across the organization were nominated to be featured, each representing their unique personalities and significant impact.
"International Women’s Day is a chance to celebrate the incredible impact women have in healthcare and beyond,” said Lynn Guerriero, president and CEO.
“Every day, we see their dedication, leadership and compassion shaping patient care, driving innovation and making a real difference. Recognizing their contributions isn’t just about honouring their achievements — it’s about continuing to push for equity and inclusion so that everyone has the opportunity to thrive."
For Anna Cobian, senior brand and digital communications specialist, capturing these images was an inspiring and deeply personal experience.
“We had the privilege of not only photographing these women but also hearing their stories — who inspires them, how they navigate challenges and what International Women’s Day means to them,” said Cobian.
“Each conversation revealed layers of the powerful presence these women have in their personal and professional lives.”
Many of the women featured find inspiration in the strong role models who support and guide them.
Christine Tan, senior procurement coordinator, strategic sourcing, finds strength in her daughter’s ambition and determination.
“She graduated a year early and is now at Rotman Business School. She is intelligent, ambitious and humble — always supporting her peers,” said Tan.
Others recognize the resilience it takes to balance multiple roles.
“I admire all women who successfully juggle personal, professional and family responsibilities,” said Louise Baillargeon, translation network manager, french language services.
Whether through bold leadership or quiet moments of kindness, women at Niagara Health create meaningful change in the lives of those around them.
“There isn’t any one particular woman that I would single out as my inspiration. Working here, there are many women who inspire me for different reasons. From their learnings, I grow and become a better woman because of it,” said Shanna Devlin, ePMO manager.
A study from the Canadian Institute for Healthcare Information found that women make up 75 per cent of hospital employees in Canada, playing a vital role in every aspect of healthcare.
Their footprint extends beyond the numbers, driving patient care, advancing research and guiding the future of the industry.
At Niagara Health, women make up 84 per cent of the workforce and hold 75 per cent of leadership positions. Their impact spans the organization, with women represented in 93 per cent of departments — including the South Niagara Hospital Redevelopment Team, where they make up two thirds of the team.
“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to honour those who paved the way for future generations, reflect on existing obstacles and commit to a more inclusive and equitable path ahead,” said Biljana Crevar, clinical manager.
For some, the journey has included overcoming barriers.
Pamela Rigo, facility supervisor, maintenance, knows firsthand the challenges of working in a male-dominated field. From battling bias to proving her expertise, she has faced obstacles that many women in similar roles understand.
“My hope is that one day, women won’t have to go through as many struggles professionally — that our skills and contributions will be valued without question, working towards true equality,” said Rigo.
Ifeoluwa Amoo, Business Systems Analyst, sees the recognition day as a time to recognize women from every corner of the world.
“It is a day to remind women that they are seen, valued, respected, loved and appreciated — regardless of their background,” Amoo said.
Creating a workplace where everyone feels supported and empowered is a continued priority at Niagara Health and the women highlighted in the series are a reflection of this commitment.
“I am constantly inspired by the women I have the honour to work with across our organization. Their dedication not only strengthens our teams but also profoundly impacts the lives of anyone who steps through our doors,” said Guerriero.
