NEWS RELEASE
NIAGARA REGION
*************************
Niagara Region is providing compost for a cash or food donation at Regional landfills from May 8 - 20. This event is in celebration of International Compost Awareness Week. The Compost Research and Education Foundation hosts this annual initiative. The goal is to educate the public on the importance of recycling organic materials and composting.
Niagara residents can pick up 20-litre bags (limit of three bags per household) of compost while quantities last. Pick-up locations are Bridge Street Waste and Recycling Depot in Fort Erie, the Niagara Road 12 Landfill in West Lincoln and the Humberstone Landfill in Welland. Residents will be required to load the compost into their own vehicle. Plan your visit outside of the busiest days (Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays) to avoid any delays.
In exchange for the compost, we ask that residents donate non-perishable food items or cash in support of these local charities:
- Fort Erie Community Outreach Program Erie
- West Lincoln Community Care
- Salvation Army Thrift Store
- The Hope Centre (Women’s Place)
- Goodwill Niagara
This Compost Awareness Week, Niagara Region is also reminding residents to use their curbside Green Bin.
Green Bins are collected weekly as part of your curbside collection. When used regularly, they help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Organic materials do not properly break down in landfills and produce methane gas. Methane gas is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Organic material placed in your Green Bin (instead of your garbage) is taken to a composting facility and turned into valuable compost.
