Niagara sees slight uptick in daily COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

Active cases drops below 900 as over 50 percent of Niagara residents gets the shot

Niagaras public health agency reports 40 new COVID-19 cases in Niagara today, which is the highest daily number so far this week.

With more than twice as many recovered compared to new cases, the number of known active infections dropped to 882 on Wednesday.

The U.K mutation of the virus remains the dominant strain of COVID-19, with both the Brazilian- and so-called double-mutation first found in India being confirmed being present in Niagara.

There are 12 active outbreaks in the region, however none are active in health-care facilities.

The death toll remained unchanged at 405.

The vaccination rate continues to increase in the region with 51 percent of residents having received at least one dose of the vaccine. Close to 4 percent of Niagara residents have a complete series.

Niagara Health said the hospital system is currently caring for 38 patients, of whom 19 are in ICU.

Provicially, Ontario logged 1,095 cases, and 23 deaths.
