Northern Lights as seen above Lake Ontario

A powerful geomagnetic storm

Sightings of the northern lights — known as the aurora borealis - were seen across southern Ontario on Thursday night.

They are caused by solar particles from the sun sent toward the Earth. Experts say an increase in activity — a powerful geomagnetic storm currently underway — created particularly bright lights, a cycle that typically repeats approximately every 11 years.
