Preliminary work on downtown McDonald's begins

On Thursday afternoon, heavy machinery could be seen clearing the lot for construction

Almost exactly a year ago local developer Serge Carpino announced his intent to bring the golden arches to downtown Thorold.

While it has been awfully quiet surrounding the project, there finally seems to be some movement.

Heavy machinery has started to clear the vacant lot on the corner of Pine St. S and Sullivan Ave.

Carpino’s plans to bring the famous hamburger chain to Thorold have been gestating for quite a while.

Back in February 2023, city council approved the necessary zoning changes for the development, which triggered a McFlurry of reactions.

While some residents were excited to see the hamburger chain move into the downtown core, others flagged traffic concerns about the restaurant's location right across the Prince of Wales Public School.

The latest update on the project came in July 2023, when Carpino assured hungry residents that the burger chain was still coming to town.

"It’s an absolute go,” he told ThoroldToday at the time. “We’re probably sometime in August going to start with the site improvements.”

It seems that those site improvements are finally taking place now. Heavy machinery has dug up the trees and shrubs on the lot, evidently clearing the way for the McDonald’s to be built.

Hungry residents starving for a burger will possibly have to wait a little while longer as it’s unclear when the next phase of the project will commence.

ThoroldToday reached out to Carpino for comment but did not hear back.
