Riganelli's Bakery torn down on Monday morning (3 Photos)

End of an era for heritage Italian bakery operating in town since 1957

An era came to an end in Thorold on Monday morning as a scoop tore through the ceiling of Riganelli’s Bakery.

The popular Italian bakery closed up shop last summer after the owners retired and the property was sold.

Riganelli’s was founded by the Riganelli family in 1957, until it was taken over by Nick Dell’Omo in 1999. Dell’Omo started working in the bakery at 11 years old so when he took over the business he made sure to keep the Riganelli family spirit alive.

He expanded the bakery to supply bread products to grocery stores all over Niagara. Last Saturday was the last time Dell’Omo opened his doors and sold the people of Thorold his delicious breads and pastries.

Realty representatives have told ThoroldToday that the Ormond Street lot will be home to a private residence, however no further details have been released.

“Nice place, nice people who used to run it,” said a man who passed by the construction work on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, work is underway to transform the former home of Hana's Place on Front Street to a mix of residential- and commercial use after the restaurant also closed down
