The Niagara Health Knowledge Institute’s (NHKI) sought-after Summer Student Research Scholarships are back for 2025 with a new opportunity for aspiring health researchers.
Building on last year’s success, the NHKI is once again partnering with Brock University, Niagara College and the Thrombosis Atherosclerosis Research Institute’s (TaARI) Liaw Lab to offer one scholarship each for undergraduate students enrolled in health-related programs. The students will participate in a research-focused placement at the NHKI between May and August 2025.
New this year, the NHKI is introducing a fourth scholarship in partnership with the University of Niagara Falls.
“We’re thrilled to offer local college and university students the opportunity to work with our researchers again this summer,” says Elaina Orlando, NHKI Research Manager. “After the success of our first research scholarship cohort last year, we’re excited to welcome a new group of students who will bring their unique perspectives and skills to the NHKI. This program gives them the chance to contribute to research that will impact standards of healthcare and contribute to building research capacity in community hospitals.”
The Summer Student Research Scholarships, valued at about $10,000 each, aim to support the development and retention of high-potential future researchers in Niagara.
Scholarship recipients will gain hands-on experience in the NHKI’s vibrant and growing research environment while developing valuable research skills, new networks and exposure to a community hospital research environment.
Recipients from Brock University, Niagara College and University of Niagara Falls Canada will work alongside an NHKI researchers to contribute to existing research projects. They will assist with data collection, entry, validation and analysis, abstract writing, and presenting study findings or updates. The TaARI scholarship recipient will be primarily located at the TaARI Liaw Lab in Hamilton, with regular opportunities to meet and collaborate with the NHKI team in Niagara.
The NHKI actively participates in research and multi-centre clinical trials across various fields, including cardiology, critical care medicine, emergency medicine, hematology and transfusion medicine, infectious diseases, neurology, oncology and thrombosis. Its mission includes a strong commitment to improving the quality of patient care and building research capacity in community hospitals.
