Leaks in the roof of the Thorold Community Arena will set city finances back $25,000, a report from city staff reveals.
It was during a recent routine inspection of the building that staff found two ‘significant’ leaks in the roof of the arena - one of them labeled a safety concern.
The report states that one of the leaks, on the south roof, covering the ice resurfacer room, as well as the Thorold Figure Skaters and the Thorold Mounts offices will cost $16,000 to fix, as the roof line is original to the facility and ‘can’t be repaired in an efficient manner.’
The second location is above the garage roof that houses snow removal- and lawn care equipment, which due to safety concerns is considered unusable at this time.
Staff cautioned that there could be some unknown conditions in the roof structure, and asked for a reserve fund of $2,300 in case more materials would be needed.
DF Brown Roofing recently replaced the Arena Lobby flat roof, and the roofs of the C.E Grose Soccer Pavilion and Keefer Mansion.
Council also decided to recently upgrade the arena speaker systems.
The Thorold Arena has been closed to the public since last year.
Council is expected to approve the repairs on its June 1 meeting.
