It’s harvest time at the Niagara College Teaching Winery and two classes of first-year students will get their feet wet by participating in an ancient winemaking practice that dates back thousands of years – the grape stomp!

Professor Gavin Roberson will introduce the grape stomp to his winemaking class of Winery and Viticulture Technician students on the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 17 and a class of Beverage Business Management students will have an opportunity to participate in Professor Peter Rod’s Beverage Alcohol Production class on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Both classes will begin by picking grapes in the campus vineyard before teaming up with their classmates for a lively grape stomp challenge. Racing against the clock, students will take turns on the stomping bins as each team vies to yield the most juice.
