Last weekend, social media was buzzing after Niagara_411 reported that the Thorold Fire Department was called to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Elementary School — for a 13-year-old stuck in a basketball net.

For obvious reasons, the 911 call triggered quite a flurry of comments online.

Here's what really happened, according to Thorold Fire and Emergency Services.

On Saturday Oct. 15, the fire department did indeed respond to a call at the school, located at 41 Collier Rd. S. But when they arrived, they realized no one was actually stuck in a basketball net.

The school has recently installed a new piece of playground equipment that consists of a plastic cone with three holes on a metal pole. Kids can throw a ball into the cone and it will come out of a different hole each time.

A group of girls were playing a game in which they climbed up the equipment and jumped back down. After reaching the top, one of the girls was too scared to come down.

Firefighters were able to help the girl down. The equipment was only about eight feet high so they didn’t even need to get a ladder.

The Thorold Fire Department advises people to call 911 only in case of a serious emergency.
