Thorold Anchors hope to hit glory days again

Boys of Summer kick off season May 17; 'I really want to take this senior program back to where it used to be, when Thorold was the mecca of baseball in Ontario'

Baseball season is drawing near and today the Thorold Anchors have announced their schedule for this year’s Niagara District Baseball Association (NDBA) Senior Men’s League.

“We’re really excited about the season,” says the team’s manager, Aaron McInnis, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “We started [practicing] in February. I would say that we’re all ready. We’re getting hungry for baseball.”

Throughout the season, which runs from May until August, the Thorold Anchors will face off against six other senior men's baseball teams from all over Niagara. Each team will play each other four times for a total of 24 games.

The home opener will be a game against the Niagara Falls Expos in McMillan Park at 7.30 p.m. on May 17. As always, the Anchors are teaming up with Community Care and fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate.

McInnis hopes this season will put the Thorold Anchors on the map again.

“My hopes for the team are to be competitive every night and to bring a lot of the Thorold faithful out to the ballpark and get a bit of a following,” he says. “I really want to take this senior program back to where it used to be when the national championships were held here and when Thorold was the mecca of baseball in Ontario. I want to get back to it.”
