Thorold City Council approves plans for second City Hall

'We’re moving City Hall back to the old heart of Thorold'

Thorold City Council has approved City Hall's plans to move into the second floor of the Thorold Seniors' Centre on Carleton St. S.

As ThoroldToday reported, the City has outgrown its current headquarters on Schmon Parkway, which is why they want to move the Development Services Office into the Thorold Seniors' Centre.

The project was briefly discussed during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

“History repeats itself,” said Councillor Henry D’Angela. “We’re moving City Hall back to the old heart of Thorold. It’s been a long time coming.”

Before City Hall can move in, the second floor will need to be renovated.

Mountainview Construction Inc. has signed on to complete the project at a price of $697,455, excluding HST.

The new City Hall office will come with a board room, meeting rooms, private offices and a reception area.

“That reception area will be manned all the time,” the City’s Director of Development Services, Jason Simpson, told council members. “Staff will be sitting there, that will be their permanent location.”

Councillor Ken Sentance asked about parking at the second City Hall location.

With the influx of residents and staff, the parking lot at the Thorold Seniors’ Centre could quickly be overrun.

“As we add more staff then obviously there will be some impacts depending on timing,” said the Director of Community Services Geoff Holman. “We’ve been looking at about half an acre or an acre and a half just east of the Canadian Corps building that can be expanded. We’ll find out the best way to manage the existing space and if we have to expand, we can.”

And with that, council approved the plans for the redesign.

There’s no set timeline for when the project will be complete.
