The Thorold Community Credit Union is giving back!
On Monday afternoon, the group presented two Thorold teens, Avery and Bayleigh Davidson, with $750 to help them kickstart their higher education.
“It’ll help pay for our fees at school,” explained Bayleigh. “We’re going into our first year. I’m going to McMaster for psychology.”
“And I’m going to Brock for nursing,” added Avery.
The two teens have just graduated from Thorold Secondary School and they’re excited to continue their education.
Even though they’re cousins, they had no idea were both recipients of the same grant from the Thorold Community Credit Union until they showed up on Monday afternoon.
Both women credit their academical success to their family.
“My mother Katie always supports me,” said Bayleigh.
The Davidson cousins weren’t the only ones receiving funding from the Thorold Community Credit Union on Monday afternoon.
Community Care Thorold was also the lucky recipient of a $1,200 donation.
“We had a barbecue and it was by donation and that’s where this money is coming from,” explained Ken Campbell, who is the chair of the credit union’s board.
“So far to date we’ve fundraised $2,575 in donations,” added the credit union's CEO Tim Whalen. “That’s just this year, 2024.”
This is not the first time the credit union has donated money to Thorold Community Care. Earlier this year, they presented the charitable group with a cheque for $1,000.
With the latest donation, Community Care will be able to do a lot of good.
“This money will go into our food program,” said the manager of Community Care Thorold, Maxine Hutchings. “We also have our back-to-school program starting soon so possibly some of the funding will go into our snacks and sneakers program. We’re looking at maybe supplying 1,700 kids this year with backpacks, school supplies, sneakers and snacks.”
It’s no coincidence that the credit union decided to donate to Community Care Thorold again.
“That’s the thing about our donation — it stays in Thorold,” said Whalen.
And that's why the members of the credit union board hope to support Thorold Community Care for many more years to come.
“They’re on our speed dial,” laughed Campbell.
