The rising cost of living is affecting everybody, and more and more Thorold residents are turning to the local food bank.

To help keep up with demand, the Thorold Community Credit Union has donated $1,000 to Community Care Thorold.

“It’s money that we’ve earned that we put into a fund and then we distribute that to the community,” explained the Chair of the Credit Union’s Board, Ken Campbell. “We like to support anyone in Thorold that we can but Community Care is top of our list all the time. They do a lot for everybody and they need the money.”

On Friday afternoon, Campbell was joined by board member Tim O’Hare and Thorold Community Credit Union CFO Marissa Spence, as they handed over the cheque to Maxine Hutchings, who is the branch manager at Community Care Thorold.

“I really appreciate it,” said Hutchings. “The need has really grown. I know clients appreciate it when our shelves are full and they cannot be full without your help so thank you so much.”

In the past year, Community Care Thorold has seen a 90 per cent increase in the number of times clients access their food services.

With the $1,000 cheque, the food bank will be able to stock up their shelves once again.

“Definitely the food program is our biggest need at the moment,” Hutchings told ThoroldToday. “That’s how we started and it will always be like that and the need just keeps growing.”

Spence explained that the donation figures into the credit union’s ethos to be an active part of the community.

“Our members own us so whatever we can give back we do,” she said. “Community Care is local. They’re right around the corner. They constantly do amazing work for the people that live here in Thorold. It was a no-brainer.”
