Sami Alhaj has owned Thorold Fish and Chips on Front St. N for the past three years, but now he has decided to move on.
The business has already been for sale for a few weeks, and Alhaj intends to keep the restaurant going for as long as it takes to find a buyer.
“I’m not closing it down,” says Alhaj, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “I want to keep it running for the new owner. Whenever he comes, he can just start the next day making his money.”
Last October, Thorold Fish and Chips was the victim of an after hours burglary but Alhaj says the break-in has little to do with his decision to sell.
The main reason he is stepping away from the business is his family back in Palestine.
“I have to go back home for a while,” he says. “I’ve been here maybe fifteen years and I didn’t go. This kind of job, it ties you down if you don’t have helpers that you depend on.”
The one thing Alhaj will miss the most about the business are the customers.
“They are nice people,” he says. “Once the break-in happened I received many messages of support. I would really like to thank them for that.”
