Thorold-made signs supporting Indigenous, First Nations people are selling by the hundreds

Duo wanted to show support – Here is how you can, too

Signs of support for the Indigenous- and First Nations communities are quickly making their way onto Niagara lawns and windows, after a local duo decided to take action following the discoveries of hundreds of unmarked graves near former residential schools in B.C. and Saskatchewan.

“I was nauseated when they discovered the first babies in B.C, and thought of what we could do to show our support for the Indigenous community,” said Patti Bauer, who banded together with Santino Perri, owner of Thorold print shop Impact Promotions to begin making the signs.

“I lost my own daughter to cancer, but I know what happened, and I have a place to go to pay my respects. These graves had no marking, or anything. I can’t imagine what it is like not knowing what happened to your child.”

‘Every Child Matters - Each Has A Place In Our Hearts’ is the message.

With the help of Impact Promotions, who donated a large amount of material, the signs can now be bought in either single- or double sided versions, with the proceeds going to Mohawk Culture Centre in Brantford. So far, around 300 signs have left the print-shop.

While the financial donations will help the centre, both Bauer and Santino agree that it is important that the local community openly show support.

“When I read about it, I was sick to my stomach. These were someone’s children,” said Santino Perri.

“With these signs on lawns and in windows, it’s at least a way to show that we are thinking of them and are supporting them.”

Yesterday, the city announced that it will be cancelling the previously planned Canada Day-celebrations in recognition of the unjust treatment of First Nations, with Mayor Terry Ugulini encouraging people to use the day to reflect on Canada's past and present.

Signs are $20 for double-side (message printed on both sides) with $15 going to Mohawk Woodland Centre.

Single side will be $10 with the whole $10 going to the Mohawk Woodland Centre.
