The Thorold U21 BB team became provincial winners at the OMHA championship this past weekend.

Thorold Minor Hockey keeps on winning.

This past weekend, the Thorold Blackhawks U21 BB team skated its way into Thorold history by becoming provincial winners at the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) Championship.

“I’m feeling really good, to be honest,” says the president of the Thorold Minor Hockey Association, Mike DeGasperis, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “They had a really successful weekend and to see them come home as champions is pretty wild. It’s nice to see.”

The championship took place in Whitby and saw the Blackhawks U21 BB team face off against several other U21 BB teams from across Ontario. The Blackhawks played against the Centre Hasting Grizzlies, the West Niagara Flying Aces, the Blyth-Brussels Crusaders, and the Ennismore Eagles, before facing the U21 Riverside team in the final. The Blackhawks won the game 4-1, taking home the provincial title.

DeGasperis feels proud of what team has accomplished this year.

“At that age group I don’t even know if it has happened before,” he says. “This team was brought together by the coach Kory Yungblut and he really brought it all together to make it happen.”

So what’s next for the U21 BB Team?

“The game plan is to have the team again next year,” says DeGasperis. “That’s always the goal, to ice as many teams as we can. Right now it’s hard to say because our registration hasn’t opened up yet but hopefully some of these kids will stick around and do it again next year.”
