For some Thorold residents summer is all about rest and relaxation, but for the Thorold Public Library it’s about reconnecting with the local community.
“We try and provide as much, if not more, programs than we have in the previous months,” says the Chief Librarian Joanne DeQuadros, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “Children are home from school so there is more opportunity to engage in our programs.”
One of the more popular programs in the library these days is the reading club.
“We have clubs for all ages,” DeQuadros says. “You read different titles and come in to report, especially for kids, and they actually get prizes.”
Outside of the reading clubs, the library is also hosting a ‘Makerspace’ drop-in program every Monday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. where participants get the opportunity to explore different creative projects.
And then there are also the early literacy programs which have proven so popular the library has had to add an extra class on Wednesday mornings.
Putting on programming at the library wasn’t always easy in the last two years because of the pandemic.
“With COVID we were restricted to the number of people we could have in a program, especially when social distancing measures were in place,” DeQuandros says. “Now with things opening, it has made things a little easier.”
DeQuadros says it’s great that the library is able to put on its wide range of programs again.
“It’s fabulous,” she says. “We’re so happy to be back, just like everyone else.”
