Thorold Secondary students showcase talent at inaugural art exhibit

'We have some really talented kids here, like really talented kids'

On Thursday evening, the Thorold Public Library hosted a special exhibition showcasing the artistic work of some of Thorold Secondary’s most gifted students.

“The Thorold Library was really generous and they gave us this opportunity,” visual arts teacher Kim Duggan told ThoroldToday. “They actually reached out to us. It’s a great opportunity because it’s hard to find places to show off your work. This is a really nice, just easy setup.”

The work on display was created by students in Grade 9 all the way through to Grade 12.

“I just pulled from this semester,” explained arts teacher Carlee Mctavish.

“We have all sorts of media represented,” added Duggan. “Paper mache and sculpture, fibre arts — we have everything.”

The fibre art pieces were hanging from the ceiling and featured artwork created with very fine needlework.

“We’re hoping people are just going to sit under it and take in the beautiful embroidery that is going on back there,” said Duggan.

Both teachers said that the art exhibit is a nice feather in the cap for the students.

“We have some really talented kids here, like really talented kids,” said Duggan. “It’s really nice for them to get some accolades. It gives a sense of pride and how great they are when you have other people in the community seeing it.”

“It’s great for our program too,” added Mctavish. “We had a prospective student come through and [we got to] talk about our program and show it off a little bit.”

While this is the first time Thorold Secondary has organized the art exhibit, it is the teachers’ hope that it is the start of many more.

“We’re hoping that maybe this opportunity presents itself in the future again and that we see other things happen as a result too,” said Duggan.
